No title favourites

CLUB champions will face off at Marian this weekend in the first of the 2015 Champion of Club Champions events with no firm favourites among the 13 clubs represented.

Marian’s Peter Hamelink, Peter Kaloczy, Jim Connor and Norm Waterhouse have the home green advantage as well as a bye in the first round before they meet the winner of Seaforth/Northern Beaches. Suburban and Proserpine meet in the second round after a first round bye.

It was a family affair at Proserpine when the Kinnear family (Graham and his sons Scott, Luke and Michael) won the club fours but Luke is unavailable this weekend. The weekend winner will represent the Mackay district in the zone final in Emerald at the end of the month. The draw is: 9am Saturday Pioneer Valley (D Kane, G Blackburn, S Roesler, N Grummitt) v RSL Memorial (Keiran Lowth, M McCall, I McGrath, Kane Lowth); Sarina (T Whitney, N Bradford, H Mansfield, B Dau) v Glenden (G Hills, G Sweeney, R Burt, I Gardner); North Mackay (P Horsburgh, K Wedel, D Peet, S McGuiness) v Airlie Beach (N Fernbach, R Williams, D Dias, K Jewell); Mackay (G Mulheron, M Boyd, P Molloy, M Walsh) v City (W Sturgeon, D Menzies, J Taylor, V McSherry); Seaforth (K Schmidtke, P Higham, M Glew, M Stewart) v Northern Beaches (B Finlay, P Finlay, T Kelly, A Johnstone).

At 1pm Saturday Souths Suburban (A Davey, C Lanyon, M Pilcher, R Spence) v Proserpine (S Kinnear, L Kinnear (sub B Davy), M Kinnear, G Kinnear); Marian (P Hamelink, P Kaloczy, J Connor, N Waterhouse) v winner Seaforth/Northern Beaches.

Southern trip

Visitors from the south made the trip worthwhile when they won the major money at the Sarina Invitation Fours at the weekend. Six teams all recorded four out of five wins but Jeff Gees and Jack Horne from Kandanga teamed up with Eddie Whiteside and Damian Rideout from Gladstone (pictured), to win 55 ends to edge out the Beaches’ Jason Little on 52 ends. Sarina’s Brian Adams, the Beaches’ John Oliver and Glenden’s Ian Gardner filled the minor places.

Test of skill

Northern Beaches are hoping for two full greens for their annual Invitation Men’s three-bowl pairs next weekend, with bowlers playing seven games of 18 ends which will test their concentration and staying power as well as their skill.
